Top Lodging Gem #3 Volcano Rainforest Retreat, Volcano, Hawaii

The cabins at the Volcano Rainforest Retreat are like none other. The cabin we stayed in, the Sanctuary, was round shaped with windows on the ¾ sides, giving a new meaning to feeling like you are in a fishbowl. The best part is, when you look outside, you don’t see any other cabins because all the trees create a thick, jungle atmosphere. 

Each afternoon, they brought fresh fruit, granola and filled up our fridge with juices and milks for the next morning.

Volcanoes National Park is about a 5-minute drive from the retreat, enabling you to get up early to experience the Thurston Lava Tube, which is one of the main attractions in the park and fills up quickly with crowds. Also, you can stay late in the park to see the glow of Halema'uma'u Crater.

Volcanoes National Park is one of the few places in the world where you can see the endangered Nene.

After a day at the park, we headed back to our cabin, the Sanctuary, which was the only cabin that had an Ofuro, a Japanese soaking tub. Decadent!
